While strolling through the gardens at the Choo Choo, you may hear this invitation bellowed out by the Conductor of the Choo Choo’s authentic 1924 New Orleans’ Trolley. Just step aboard the Trolley, and you will begin an exciting, entertaining, and educational excursion around the Choo Choo complex. How this unique mode of transportation made it to the Choo Choo attraction is a story in itself.
City Street Railway Company ran Chattanooga’s first electric car, which traveled from the Stanton House Hotel (now the site of the Choo Choo) through downtown in 1888. By 1889, the city had 55.5 miles of trolley track running through the city. Eventually, the trolley system grew to an amazing operation with 109 cars operating on 110 miles of track. After World War II, American rail travel began to decline, and this became apparent in Chattanooga with the termination of the trolley service.
On April 10, 1947, at 12:47 a.m., Chattanooga’s last trolley rolled into the Trolley Barn at 3rd and Market Streets. Today, visitors can still see this Trolley Barn, as it is now known as Big River Grille and Brewing Works.
In 1924, Pearly Thomas Car Works of High Point, NC, built the Choo Choo’s trolley. The reversible seats were constructed in Philadelphia, PA. The Trolley operated on the Canal Street Line in New Orleans from 1924 to 1960. The Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum obtained the Trolley and brought it to Chattanooga in 1964. After being restored in Georgia, the Trolley began operating from the opening day at the Chattanooga Choo Choo in 1973 and provides one of the most unique experiences on the property.
During the holidays, you will notice decorations outside and inside the trolley, and you might even catch the Conductor donning a Santa hat! Whatever the time or the occasion, you are sure to be entertained and educated by the Conductor and his crew. So, ALL ABOARD, for a unique, educational, fun-filled experience!
